The VoiceOver Network is about bringing the industry together to be Inclusive not Divisive
It is very hard to avoid it these days. Everyone is talking about it, what’s been said now, who said it and why? I’m talking about negative campaigning and fake news. It’s something that years ago we would have been horrified that people would accuse the media of reporting fiction as opposed to fact. But now it’s talked about all the time and no one bats an eye lid. It has become part of everyday. Negative campaigning, I guess has always been there but it just seems like it’s talked about much more now. It can be very difficult to navigate through life and business these days without being confronted with negative campaigning or fake news. Can someone really get away with making something up about a person and posting it online? With social media, it can make it very easy for people to vent their anger about something or attack another human being. This behavior always says a lot more about the attacker than the victim.
I say stay away from negative campaigning
As a business owner and a mother, I always find it hard when I see this negativity and I try my best to avoid it. Yes, I know I need to stay informed with the news and what is going on in the world but this behavior can be infectious and if you’re not careful negativity can destroy people. I have seen it happen and it’s horrible to watch. I have always believed in being kind and helping others. This is a tough belief to stick to when you see people in the media and on social media being viscous and attacking each other. But I have and I will always believe that we treat people how we want to be treated, even if it’s not reciprocated.
Life is precious
I have been the victim of trolling and bullying in the past and it is something lots of people in business have to deal with especially those in the public eye. It is horrible. It can seem easy for people to strike out on social media with a nasty comment here or there about another human being without taking the time to really think about how those words would affect that person.
The best thing is always to walk away and keep your head held high. It can be very difficult especially when people tell lies about you which has happened to me.
Communication is always the best route if possible. And if it’s not possible then my advice is to walk away.
I think that it’s important to surround yourself with inspiring and supportive people. Walk away from negativity whether it’s in the media or on social media. We are all human beings, treat others how you want to be treated and stay true to who you are.
